Pinewood Rocks! at TESOL 2017 Convention
On February 10-12, 2017, several Pinewood faculty and students participated in the 24th Annual Convention of TESOL Macedonia-Thrace (TESOL = Teachers of English toSpeakers of Other Languages). On Saturday, February 11, Mrs. Monica Varsakopoulos presented a lively workshop entitled “Rockin’ and Talkin’ for Preadolescents: Content and Integrated Language Learning.” In her workshop, Mrs. Varsakopoulos led the audience in several hands-on activities she does with Grade 5 students to teach science concepts and language content. Mrs. Varsakopoulos got everyone out of their seats moving, singing and performing as we learned about rock formation and volcanoes. On Sunday morning, February 12, Ms. Anastasia Panidou and Ms. Alexandra Valtzidou delivered a very informative presentation called “Implementation and Evaluation of Emotional Awareness Projects,” in which they described a project done by Pinewood students to identify and encourage kind behavior. They also led the audience in various small group activities about emotional awareness and intelligence. On Sunday afternoon, convention participants were treated to a guitar duet performed by Pinewood students Grigor Ylli, Grade 8, and his brother Thanasis Ylli, Grade 10. The audience loved the boys’ performance, and expressed their hopes to hear them play again next year! Pinewood faculty who attended presentations at the TESOL 2017 Convention are Ms. Roxanne Giampapa, Ms. Evie Kota, Ms. Sophia Konstantinidou, Ms. Linda Manney, Ms. Alexia Marinides, Ms. Anastasia Panidou, Ms. Amalia Spiliakou, Ms. Alexandra Valtzidou, and Mrs. Monica Varsakopoulos. Students and faculty alike showed everyone there that Pinewood Rocks!
